About us

The story of Kathaवट

A neighbourhood children's library which children love to visit, explore and grow.

Our story

From 250 books to a banyan of stories

Katha means story, and Vat means a banyan tree. Just as a banyan spreads its roots and branches, we hope Kathaवट will grow with every child and every book: a place to discover wonderful books, explore new ideas, ask questions, and develop a love for reading.

Kathaवट began in 2023 as a small library inside a multi-activity centre for kids, with about 250 books. As more families discovered it, the shelves kept growing. Today Kathaवट is an independent, self-funded children's library in Dhanori with more than 5,000 thoughtfully chosen books. It has grown through personal commitment, community participation and many generous book donations.

Our collection gives special importance to stories rooted in Indian settings and everyday life, alongside wonderful books from around the world, in English, Hindi and Marathi.

What we believe

  • Reading for pleasure matters. Children should read because they are curious or moved, not only because a book is assigned.
  • The right book can help a child feel seen, ask questions and imagine lives beyond their own.
  • Every child grows into a reader at their own pace. Our job is to offer access, time, choice and encouragement, not pressure.
  • A library is more than shelves. It is a shared space where children meet stories, ideas and one another.
