How Kathaवट began: from 250 books to a neighbourhood library
Every banyan starts small. Kathaवट did too.
In 2023, Kathaवट began as a small library inside a multi-activity centre for kids in Pune, with about 250 books.
Why a library, and why this way?
The idea was simple. Children deserve access to good books, and the freedom to explore them without pressure. Not reading lists, not tests, but a space where a child can follow their curiosity, pick up a book they'd never have chosen, put it down if it isn't working, and come back to a favourite again and again.
That idea came from our founder Priya's own journey through Social Emotional Learning and library education. She completed the Library Educator's Course (2022–23) by Bookworm Library, Goa, with TISS. It shaped how we choose books: for quality of story and illustration, for age-suitability, and for the conversations they can start.
Growing roots
As more families joined, the shelves kept growing. Book by book, Kathaवट became an independent, self-funded children's library in Dhanori with more than 5,000 thoughtfully curated books. That growth came from personal commitment, the trust of families, and many generous book donations from our community.
Along the way we added the things that make a library feel alive: weekend story time, themed book displays, reading challenges, creative workshops, and sessions with storytellers, authors and illustrators.
What hasn't changed
We still believe what we believed with 250 books. Reading for pleasure matters. The right book can help a child feel seen. And every child becomes a reader in their own way, at their own pace.
If you're in or around Dhanori and Lohgaon, come and see for yourself. We'd love to help your child find their next favourite book.
